📅 March 2025 – A long-awaited decision has finally arrived: HHC (hexahydrocannabinol) will officially be added to the list of controlled substances across the European Union.

🚨 What Has the EU Decided?

The scientific committee of the EMCDDA (European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction), in collaboration with the European Medicines Agency (EMA), has recommended that HHC be classified as a banned narcotic, following a thorough analysis of its psychoactive effects and associated health risks.

The decision was adopted by the European Commission on the recommendation of Member States, and now imposes a ban on the production, sale, and distribution of HHC across the entire EU.

🧠 What Is HHC?

HHC is a semi-synthetic cannabinoid derived from hydrogenating THC. Until recently, it was sold legally in several EU countries as a “legal alternative to THC,” often in the form of vape cartridges or edibles.

⚖️ Why Was HHC Banned?

HHC has been linked to a worrying increase in cases of intoxication, severe adverse effects, and potential public health risks. Specifically:

  • Psychoactive effects similar to (or stronger than) THC
  • Lack of control over purity and origin
  • Easy access by minors through online stores
  • No clinical studies on long-term safety

🔬 The EMA has stated that there are currently no approved medical uses for HHC, and that the risks outweigh any potential benefits.

🌍 What Happens Now in EU Member States?

Each Member State will have to transpose the EU decision into national law within a specified timeframe (usually 3–6 months), officially banning HHC.

In some countries (such as France, Germany, and Belgium), HHC was already banned. In others, it was still legally available in grow shops and online.

🛑 A Word of Caution for Consumers

If you’re currently using or have purchased HHC-based products (such as vape pens, cartridges, or edibles), be aware that:

  • They will no longer be legal
  • Their quality and safety are not guaranteed
  • 🧪 They may contain impurities or harmful substances

🔄 What About CBD and Cannabis Light?

  • 🔹 CBD is not included in this ban and remains non-psychoactive, although it is under review in some countries for use in food and medical products.
  • 🔹 Cannabis light (with THC < 0.2%) remains legal in Italy under Law 242/2016.

📣 Conclusion: Stay Informed

The world of legal cannabis is constantly evolving. The inclusion of HHC among controlled substances sends a clear message: the line between legality and risk is thin, and informed, conscious choices are essential.
