Left Front leaders Nicolas del Caño and Myriam Bregman participated in the massive Global Marijuana March on Saturday, which culminated in Plaza de los Dos Congresos with the slogan “No more prisoners for growing”. They marched under the PTS Youth banner, stating: “Legalization, enough with repression.”
Speaking to the press, Bregman said, “This Friday, we presented our bill to legalize marijuana from cultivation to commercialization and consumption”. She added that “prohibition only benefits drug traffickers, who collude with various sectors of the state, including security forces, the judiciary, and political actors”. She further emphasized that “the criminalization of consumption leads to social control of youth and strengthens the repressive apparatus”.
The Bregman and Del Caño Bill
The bill presented by Del Caño calls for the complete regulation of marijuana in Argentina, legalizing cultivation, commercialization, and consumption nationwide. According to its proponents, comprehensive regulation would “deal a final blow to drug cartels and protect consumers from the risks associated with unregulated products”.
The Role of the Ministry of Health
The bill emphasizes the role of the Ministry of Health, which would be responsible for conducting educational campaigns about the risks, effects, and potential harms associated with psychoactive substances like cannabis. Del Caño stated that “cannabis should not only be seen as a recreational substance but also as an essential medicine for treating numerous conditions”.
According to the bill, cannabis seeds and plant derivatives would be considered legal substances across Argentina. The regulation would cover all stages from cultivation to production, distribution, and consumption. Additionally, the Ministry of Health would be responsible for the standardization and monitoring of cannabis-based products, except for individual or collective cultivation for personal consumption, which would not be subject to state control.
